The visually intriguing and appealing Ganoderma lucidum with it’s naturally lacquered surface emphasizes this mushrooms beautiful rusty red and yellow hues. This mushroom is a good choice for the home cultivator. Not only has it been long revered for its medicinal properties it is also fascinating to watch grow.
There are two ways to fruit Reishi grow kits. If your looking for a conk shape – fruit the kit with abundant light levels, modest humidity and plenty of fresh air. Branched antler shape forms require moderate light, high humidity and minimal air flow which is achieved by placing the kit in clear bag or large glass enclosure. They are a slow growing mushroom and reach full size in 2-4 months.
Grown primarily as a medicinal mushroom – Chinese name for G. lucidum is “Lingzhi” which translates as “mushroom of immortality”.
Reishi is easily dried for use in teas, tinctures or use as a decoration. For a tea simmer fresh Reishi mushrooms in water for 20-30 minutes in order to extract the medicinal compounds. Dried Reishi must be simmered for longer (1-2 hours). The tea is bitter so adding honey and or lemon will somewhat mask the taste. The tea can be stored in the fridge for a number of days after preparing. You can freeze the liquid after water extraction in ice cubes trays for later use.
